It’s good to SINN

Whenever we talk of good quality watches our mind divert towards Swiss watches. They have their legacy, on top of that, their quality and craftsmanship makes them quite unbeatable. That’s true for most parts until you shift your focus towards their neighbour. Germany, a country associated with technological advancement is not far behind when it comes to watches. Many connoisseurs claim that German watches provide the best finish that’s possible, especially when it comes to movements and few can rebut that claim.

One such German brand who are know for their tool watch is SINN. Tool watches are basically watches that were used as tools in the bygone eras, they were the apps of those times. Like a professional diver using a divers’ watch to keep track of time or a pilot using a pilot’s watch for navigation. This year has been special for SINN as they had multiple releases including the 70’s inspired bullhead chronograph to the limited edition dive watches that celebrated the unification of Germany.

Sinn is know for its durability and functionality, keeping that in mind let me introduce the new Sinn 105 St Sa and the Sinn 105 St Sa UTC. Although these are classified as sports watches but I would say one can easily slip them on as dress watches. The case is sized reasonably at 41mm and comes in bead blasted stainless steal. Although one can find similarities with its sibling the Sinn 104 when it comes to the use of the angular lags, crown guards and partially coin edged bidirectional bezel but the difference lies in the use of black hard coating on the bezel and the inserts on the bezel which combines the hours and minutes scale. The UTC version has the 24 hours scale as it is a GMT watch. Sinn keeps up its promise of delivering watches that are durable and in order to do that Sinn uses the proprietary material called Tegiment to harden the bezel. The watches are 200 m water resistant and has sapphire display caseback.

Both the versions of the new Sinn 105 is available in matte black or matte white dial option. Most tof the beauty lies in the finer details, like the indices are lozenge shaped, the sparse overall texts on the dial, lack of split seconds markings on the minute track etc. This makes the dial appear clear and brings in an air of freshness, But we need some colour to make the watch pop out and that is achieved by the use of orange color. While the Sinn 105 uses orange seconds hand the Sinn 105 UTC uses traffic turn like shaped arrows as GMT hand (orange). In both the watches the date is displayed at 6 o’ clock. The Sinn 105 has day-date both at 6 o’clock and one stacked over the other.

The familiar Sellita SW 220-1, the 38 hours power reserve beating at 28,800 bph lies at the heart of the Sinn 105. A movement which is quite common across the product line. One can see that the movement has been decorated with radial brushing across the bridges, usage of blue screws and striped golden rotor.

The Sinn 105 UTC is powered by the Sellita SW 330-1 automatic GMT movement. The movement is quite common in watches offering GMT feature and has 42 hours reserve and beats at 28,800 bhp. The watches are available in 3 strap options viz. the stainless steel bracelet, the black rubber and the black leather (orange contrast stitching).

Well my opinion is that the watch is definite departure from the standard designs that we are accustomed to seeing from Sinn. The watch borders on the sports-dress look making it versatile. Subtly is something that we don’t usually associate with the brand and this piece is quite subtly with clean looks. It is definitely a step forward in increasing the customer base and a nice initiative to draw attention to the underrated German brands. The MSRP will be at around $1560 for the Sinn 105 and $1830 for the UTC variant. For more details check out Sinn’s website.
